Ricardo Díez-Hochlietner

Born in Bogotá (Colombia) he has served as Spanish Diplomat from 1979 to 2024.

Graduated in Law from the Autonomous University of Madrid and in International Relations from Diplomatic School in Madrid, he began his career in the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1979 to 1981. After 5 years as Councilor in Spain’s Embassy to the Federal Republic of Germany (1981-1986), he joined the Secretariat of the State for the European Affairs, (1986-1993) where he covered
several positions until he was appointed Director General for EU Technical Coordination of the Spanish Administration (1990-1993).
 
He has served as Ambassador of Spain to the Dominican Republic (1993-1995), to the Republic of Austria (1996-2000), to the OECD (2011-2015), and to the Kingdom of Morocco (2015-2024).
 
From 1995 to 1996 he was Director General of the International Department at the Cabinet of Spain’s Prime Minister; from 2000 to 2022, Director General of Foreign Policy for Europe at the MFA and from 2002 to 2011, Secretary General of the Royal Household of HM the King of Spain (with the rank of Secretary of State).
 
He holds several foreign and Spanish decorations, among the latter, the Grand Crosses of Carlos III, of the Civil Merit, of the Military Merit and of the Naval Merit, as well as of the Canary Islands.
 
He is currently member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, based in Salzburg ( since 1999), and of the board of trustees of the United World Colleges Foundation UWC in Spain (since 2021), of the board of Foundation of the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean based in Seville, (since 1998), Vice-president of Técnicas Reunidas International (since April 2024), as well as President of the Spanish Chapter of the Club of Rome (since November 2025).
